Band - Taught by Mr. Stephen Syrell
4th Grade
Recorder class introduces students to the fundamentals of music through learning the recorder, a beginner-friendly woodwind instrument. In this class, students engage in higher-ordered thinking to build awareness of their actions as musicians. They develop essential skills such as reading music, understanding rhythm, and playing simple melodies. The recorder serves as an accessible way to build breath control, finger coordination, and listening skills. This class lays the groundwork for future participation in band and encourages a lifelong appreciation of music.
Students can purchase a recorder through the school or use one they already own.
5th & 6th Grade Beginning Band
Beginning Band is an introductory music class designed for students who are learning a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument for the first time. The course focuses on developing fundamental music skills, including how to read music, produce a clear tone, play basic rhythms, and work together as an ensemble. Students also learn responsibility through regular practice, instrument care, and teamwork. Beginning Band provides a strong foundation for future musical growth and helps build confidence, discipline, and a sense of achievement.

Please note: Families are responsible for obtaining their child’s instrument. Most families choose to rent or purchase an instrument through a local music store, and we are happy to provide recommendations to ensure quality and affordability. A limited number of school-owned instruments may be available for students with financial need, but availability is not guaranteed. Regular practice at home is essential for student progress, so having a working instrument is a key part of the learning process.
6th Grade Concert Band
The Continuing Elementary Concert Band is designed for students who have already completed at least one year of beginning band or have prior experience playing a band instrument. In this class, students build on their foundational skills by learning more advanced techniques, expanding their music reading abilities, and performing more challenging ensemble music.
Students continue to develop tone quality, rhythm accuracy, articulation, and dynamics while working together as a full band. The class emphasizes individual growth as well as group collaboration, preparing students for middle school band programs. Regular at-home practice is expected to reinforce skills learned in class and support steady progress.
This course offers students the opportunity to deepen their musicianship, perform in concerts, and continue growing their love for music in a fun and supportive environment.
