IWCS Students Excel at Great Computer Challenge

Elementary students across Isle of Wight County Schools ​excelled at the Great Computer Challenge, a joint project of WHRO, the Consortium for Interactive Instruction, and Old Dominion University. The challenge provides a competitive opportunity for students in Kindergarten through 12th Grade, from public and private schools, to demonstrate their knowledge of various computer applications and programming skills.

In Level 1 Visual Programming/Block Coding, Carrollton Elementary placed with a designation of Good, which is equivalent to third place. Team members are Trace Sciarrotta, Finnegan May, and Thomas Drotleff, all second graders.  Their coach is Michelle Pealo. Hardy Elementary (HES) also placed with a designation of Good.  Team members are Elijah Bradley, Ruby Brown, and Jackson Nichols.  Coaches are Mallory Bradley, Rhelda Furnari, and Kathy Wood.

In Level I Desktop Publishing, Hardy’s team of Oliver Poler and Carter Bray received a Superior, the equivalent of first place.  The HES Level 2 Desktop Publishing team of Tahna Miller, Jamison Scott, and Anna Gies received an Honorable Mention.  Both teams are coached by Alicia Reeves and Angela Thompson. In Graphic Design, the Level 1 HES team of Elena Smith, Judson Miles, and Nora Bender received a Superior rating. The Level 2 team of Norah Price, Emily Reed, and Juanita Nunez-Rodriguez placed second.  Both teams are coached by Heather Stafford and Erin Matzen.

Westside Elementary placed third in the Level 2 Internet Scavenger Hunt.  Team members are Lillian Freestrom and Miranda Jones.  Their coach is Sharon Chapman.  In Level 2 Block Coding, Westside placed second.  Team members are Logan Tardif, Violet Pealo, and Alice Thomsen.  Their coach is Dr. Erica Newcomb.
