Can you picture yourself solving a problem like: “How many packages of Ramen noodles could a VW Bug hold in its cargo area?” If so, join the Fermi Math Club. See Ms. Kardos for more information.

Time Frame: Monday and Friday mornings, yearlong

For students who are proficient with desktop presentations, graphic design, desktop publishing, Internet scavenger hunts, or video editing. (Students should know how to use Word, Power Point, or various search engines, depending on the category in which they are interested.) New recruits must be in fourth or fifth grade. Interested students will be given a project to complete. These projects will be judged to determine team members for the spring competition. Try-outs in November.

Relay for Life Kids Club

The Kids Club was started in 2014 to teach our students the importance of healthy eating, staying active, and learning about the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. The Kids Club creates posters for events and activities occurring at Westside and assists with Penny Wars, Boo and Sham-o-Grams, and Relay Recess.

Time Frame: Yearlong

See Ms. M. Smith or Ms. Woodland for more information.

Time Frame: Meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Wednesday afternoons

Safety Patrol

The role of safety patrol is to teach students to direct their peers in safety. Interacting with school traffic, 6th graders receive training in the fundamentals of traffic safety and procedures. Patrollers direct children, not traffic. Patrollers will assist in hallways, bathrooms, buses and crosswalks. Application required.

Time Frame: Yearlong

Westside Bibliophile Book Clubs

The library offers two book clubs — one for fourth- and fifth-grade students and one for sixth-grade students. Our focus is the Virginia Readers’ Choice selections for the year. We discuss the books (in person and online), do fun activities related to our reading, make video book trailers, and connect with authors and other book clubs via Skype.

Time Frame: 4th/5th club meets on Tuesdays, October – April; 6th meets one Thursday/month during lunches

Westside Makers

An after-school program focusing on activities and projects tied to the arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Students are encouraged to problem-solve, tinker, use their imaginations, and be creative. Past meetings have included working with Code.org, duct tape, K’Nex, origami, Little Bits, MaKey MaKey, MinecraftEdu, Perler beads, Snap Circuits and more. Students sign up for each individual session on a first-come, first-served basis.

Time Frame: Thursdays, October – May
