Summer is here! We are sure your child’s head is filled with visions of trips to the pool and freedom from school! Although summer vacation activities are important, we urge you to make sure that your child also continues to read regularly throughout the break.
In order to encourage reading we are promoting Westside’s “FLIP Over Books, FLOP Down and Read” summer reading program. We are challenging the students of Westside to read 1,000 pages over summer break! Students are welcome to read books of their choice. Parents are encouraged to read to their children as well. During open house in August and the first week of school, students can turn in their reading records to their teachers. (Please total the number of pages read at the bottom of the form.) The FLIP-FLOP party will take place in September. Students will be invited to wear their favorite flip-flops and join us for games and frozen treats.
Parents, reading aloud to your child is just as important as children reading independently. We encourage you to include read-aloud books on your child’s record, as well as books read for the public libraries’ summer reading programs. Above all, the most important thing is to keep reading!
